Xperia Z confirmed to hit European markets on February 21

Word from Sony about the official launch of the Xperia Z in Germany popped up on the company's Facebook page. The smartphone will go on sale at the Sony Store in Berlin on the 21st.

While there is no word from the Facebook announcement on whether availability will also go for the rest of Europe from that date, we've also received an invite for an event outside of Germany, so likely February 21 will be a pan-European launch date for the Xperia Z.

Sony jumped on the 5-inch 1080p bandwagon quickly with its new Z flagship, and have delivered a quite impressive device complete with quad-core Krait processor, 13MP camera, 16 GB of internal storage, 2 GB of RAM, and a very slick glass panel design that's also waterproof to boot.

While we're busy cooking up our full review of the Xperia Z, you can check out our preview of the device here.

Micromax A116 Canvas HD goes on sale, gets its first promo video

The Micromax A116 Canvas HD, one of the popular smartphones in our database, is finally launching in India.

Starting from tomorrow, February 14, Micromax will start selling its latest flagship smartphone for RS13,990 ($260) and not $280 as reports were suggesting recently. According to the company, shipments will arrive in 5-7 days, after the order has been placed.

The A116 Canvas HD is competing with the almost twice as expensive Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos I9082, which is also on sale in the country. Considering that and the more capable hardware the Canvas HD should be able to make easy work of its competitor.

To celebrate the launch of the smartphone, Micromax has also put together a promo video for it. You can check it out below.

Video has been removed as requested by Micromax.

Sony Xperia C680X test scores hint at 1080p screen, 4.2 Jelly Bean

Sony unveiled its first two flagship Androids for the year early on at CES ? the C660X Xperia Z and C650X Xperia ZL ? but there seems to be another high-ender on the way, the Sony C680X.

The model name cropped up at html5test.com, a website that benchmarks a browser?s compatibility with the HTML5 standards. The browser was running on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean device with a 1080p screen. Unfortunately, we don?t know how big that screen was.

We checked the other usual sources (Picasa, GLBenchmark, NenaMark, Indonesia?s Postel) for more info on the device but there?s nothing yet.

Considering that the difference between the C650X Xperia ZL and C660X Xperia Z is mostly in the external shell (different dimensions and waterproofing), how much different can the C680X Xperia be? And will there be a C670X?

We might find out at the MWC, but seeing how late the first leak about the C680X is, we don?t think it?s particularly likely. The C210X Xperia L and C530X Xperia SP are more likely candidates to be at Sony?s booth at the show.

Analyst: Samsung to manufacture 100 million Galaxy S IV phones

The Samsung Galaxy S IV is guaranteed to be one of the hottest sellers and after crushing the numbers, analysts have predicted that the next Samsung flagship might cause headaches to Apple.

Peter Misek from Jefferies & Company wrote a note to clients of the analytics firm saying that Samsung plans to build 100 million Galaxy S IV phones. That would require monstrous amounts of resources, which would eat into manufacturing capacity for the upcoming iPhone update.

?The enormous 100 million S4 build plan (we estimate the S3 sold 60M) is leading some suppliers to say that they will reallocate resources away from Apple.?

The last official numbers are from mid-January and state that 40 million Galaxy S III?s were shipped.

On the topic of the next iPhone, Misek had previously written that Apple is already facing manufacturing issues as suppliers struggle to provide enough units of the bigger screen for the new Apple phone. This might even lead to delaying the launch until next year.

We?re a little skeptical of another screen increase so soon after the iPhone 5 (which brought a 21% bump in surface area). With iOS? limited resolution options, a bigger screen will lead to a decrease in screen sharpness, possibly sliding below the Retina mark. Plus, Tim Cook probably doesn?t want see the iPhone upgrade timeframe slip back like it did with the 4S.

Still, 100 million Galaxy S IV?s will ensure Samsung?s dominance in the Android market (if Misek?s numbers are correct, of course). But with Apple decreasing its dependence on Samsung components, how much can iPhone 5S/6 manufacturing suffer from limited supply from Samsung and other component makers?

LG Optimus G Pro with 5.5" 1080p display display goes official

Hot on the heels of the budget L-Series trio announcement, LG took the wraps off the 5.5" 1080p display toting Optimus G Pro. The Android beast, while carrying the same name as the already official Japan-only device, is an altogether different character.

Curiously, LG released almost no specs for the smartphone, save for the presence of the impressive 5.5" 1080p display and a quad-core CPU of unknown make. Previous leak however, points at a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro unit.

The press shots of the newcomer reveal a back with great-looking sqaure patterns. LG says that the curved glass covering the device will create a 2.5D effect when looking at them.

LG points at a late February release for the Optimus G Pro, so we will likely get to have a look at the device during MWC in Barcelona.

BlackBerry Z10 review: Swipe clean

GSMArena team, 15 February 2013.

The BlackBerry Z10 heralds the rebirth of a fallen leader in the smartphone market. It's a clean break from the past with a big touchscreen and novel OS, but the same business mentality that made it the favorite of office dwellers around the world. Except, this time BlackBerry has also added a dash of fun.

Blackberry Z10 Review Blackberry Z10 Review Blackberry Z10 Review Blackberry Z10 Review
BlackBerry Z10 official images

BlackBerry's previous generation of touch-driven smartphones felt a lot like Nokia's early attempts to knock Symbian into shape for touchscreen. With the Z10, however, the company threw everything out and started fresh.

BlackBerry 10 that powers the phone is a modern operating system with a brand new gesture-based interface and support for powerful dual-core CPUs. If you think dual-core Krait is old news on Android, you'd be right, but the Z10 is closer to the iPhone in this regard - the OS has been optimized to run on very few devices (just one right now, one more on the way), allowing for maximum efficiency.

Then BlackBerry equipped the Z10 with a 4.2" WXGA screen - slightly bigger and sharper than the iPhone 5's retina display - but kept the package more compact than certain massive droids. Then came all the connectivity features, hardware ports and slots.

Here's what they ended up with, the good and the bad of it:

Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, tri/quad-band UMTS/HSPA, optional 100 Mbps LTE4.2" 16M-color WXGA (768 x 1280 pixels) capacitive touchscreen TFT Dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait, 2GB RAM, Adreno 225BlackBerry 10 OS; advanced on-screen keyboard; Office document editorBlackBerry Hub with extensive social networking connectivityBBM with video chat and screen sharing8 megapixel auto-focus camera with face detection and Time Shift; LED flash, 2MP front facing cameraFull HD (1080p) video recording at 30fps; 720p recording with front-facing camera16GB storage, microSD card slot; built-in Dropbox and Box integrationWi-Fi a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot; Wi-Fi syncBluetooth 4.0NFCstandard microUSB port, microHDMI3.5mm audio jackGPS receiver with A-GPSBrand new UI has a steep learning curveBlackBerry World missing key appsBlackBerry Maps are even worse than Apple MapsCamera offers little control over image quality

As with any newborn platform, there will be growing pains - sparse app market and iffy maps for one. The biggest concern is whether the sleek new interface will put people off (both current and new BB users). It's fast and intuitive once you get used to it, but doesn't have the level of familiarity of the iOS or Android (which honestly took years cultivating).

Blackberry Z10 Review Blackberry Z10 Review Blackberry Z10 Review Blackberry Z10 Review
BlackBerry Z10 in our office ? next to the iPhone 5

That's the mission ahead of the BlackBerry Z10. It can't single-handedly recapture the market and bring BlackBerry to its former RIM glory, instead it sets the stage for future devices (the Q10 is a couple of months away).

That's not to say that the Z10 won't achieve popularity - with quality hardware and software, the Z10 can easily net both people who need a BlackBerry but are tired of the aging BB OS 7 devices and new users who are equally tired of iOS and Android.

So, revolution or evolution? The hardware is miles ahead of Berries of old, but you'll have to jump over to the next page to see how it stacks up against current Androids and the iPhone.

Micromax A116 Canvas HD sold out, limited stock to blame

Micromax A116 Canvas HD, the latest smartphone from the Indian manufacturer and the successor of the popular A110 Canvas 2 phablet went on sale last night. As expected, the Micromax A116 smartphone was sold out in less than 30 minutes, according to several of our tipsters, who tried to get a unit.

Micromax has teamed up with snapdeal.com, one of the renowned e-commerce sites in India, for the sales of its A116 smartphone. Unfortunately, the phablet is currently out of stock and the limited stocks are to be blamed. According to one report the company only sold about 2000 units before it changed the sign to out of stock, which is rather low, given the interest the smartphone generates.

Micromax A116 Canvas HD is currently priced at INR13,990 (about $260) and the smartphone will be competing against the likes of Galaxy Grand Duos.

If you want you can still go ahead and book your unit now - it will only be shipped in 21 business days, though.

Image of Windows RT tablet shows up at Nokia event

Rumors of a Windows RT powered Nokia tablet have been going around since at least March last year and a potential slip-up at a Nokia event in Pakistan will only fuel that fire. An image shown during the presentation featured a Windows RT tablet sandwiched between a Nokia Lumia 620 and a desktop monitor displaying the Windows Start screen.

Measuring the ratio of the Lumia 620 screen and the unknown tablet, we arrived at around 11.6 inches screen diagonal. That?s a fairly popular diagonal for Windows RT tablets.

Nokia has literally bet its house on the Windows ecosystem succeeding, so a tablet might help push things along. Microsoft is quiet on Surface RT sales, but with Nokia having established itself as the Windows Phone maker, it might have better luck selling a Windows slate.

According to a rumor from December last year, the Nokia tablet will have USB and HDMI ports plus a sheet battery with two extra USB ports and a kickstand. The MWC is fast approaching and it might be the launch venue for the Finns' first tablet. We?ll be there, holding a pinch of salt.

Samsung and Apple held 52% of the smartphone market in Q4

Gartner, the popular analyst company has released its quarterly report, which shows that Samsung and Apple continue their domination in the smartphone market, while the third place is up for grabs.

Sales report of Q4 and 2012 respectively

The top two manufacturers have a combined market share of 52% with Samsung accounting for 64.5 million shipments, while Apple managed to sell 43.5 million units. The South Koreans saw an increase of 85.3% in their sales, while at the same time Apple's sales were up by 22.6% from the last year.

Android extended its lead over other operating systems by adding 145 million units, out of which Samsung accounted for 42.5%. Meanwhile, Apple's iOS market share dropped from 23.6% to 20.9% in the last quarter, but remains ahead of other rivals.

According to the Gartner's report, the third place in the smartphone game is currently held by Huawei, who managed to sell more than 27 million handsets in 2012. However, the Chinese company only holds the spot by the skin of its teeth and the competition for it remains fierce.

Alleged Galaxy S IV benchmark scores surface online

Benchmark results of what is alleged to be the upcoming Galaxy S IV have appeared online. The results have been uploaded on popular benchmarking tool GLBenchmark's website, which also lets us compare it with some of the other devices around.

The phone in question has a model number SHV-E300S, which indicates it could be the South Korean variant of the device. It's also running on Qualcomm's MSM8960 chipset, instead of the Exynos processor Samsung usually uses in its phones.

As you can see from the graph above, the SHV-E300S decimates the competition and last year's Galaxy S III in both the offscreen and onscreen benchmarks. The Nexus 4 nudges ahead in the onscreen tests but only because it has a 720p display compared to the 1080p display on the SHV-E300S.

This is probably not the international model that will likely have an Exynos processor, which could be even faster than the MSM8960 we see above (which is no slouch, either). We are likely to see more of these crop in the near future as we approach the launch of the phone.

Samsung to keep the physical home button on the Galaxy S IV

According to recent reports in South Korean newspaper Korean daily, Samsung has decided to keep the physical Home button for its Galaxy S IV upcoming flagship. If the reports are true, this means that Samsung will indeed keep the two capacitive buttons (back and menu) on the both sides of the home key.

Moreover, the speculations regarding the inclusion of an S-Pen in the Galaxy S IV have been refuted by this latest report. However, they confirm that the smartphone will come with some sort of non-contact gestures.

More details regarding the Samsung Galaxy S IV will be known at the end of March, when the company is rumored to hold an Upacked event, dedicated exclusively to its next flagship. The device itself is expected to hit the shelves only a couple of weeks later in April.

Virtual personal assistant shootout: Talk the talk

GSMArena team, 12 February 2013.

What can I help you with? Hope your day is going well. It's a start. But it'll take time for the likes of Siri and Google Now to live up to the Intelligent Personal Assistant title. Surprisingly, intelligent isn't too far off for software that's context and location aware, does speech recognition and has an impressive backend of resources and services. Personal? Well, Google obviously knows who you are, where you are and what you've been up to lately. Yet, we'll stick to calling them virtual for now.

Assistant then is perhaps the trickiest bit. So it seems. And the question is (barring scenarios where your hands and eyes are busy with something else) whether we really need to do by voice what can be done at the click of a button - ok, a few buttons. And if it's info and content, can we not just Google it instead of having Google Now do it for us?

Virtual Personal Assistants

Anyway, things like Google Now and Siri are but a taste of what your smartphone can do for you. There's plenty of potential there and Apple and Google are hopefully looking beyond the launching of apps, personalized and localized search and voice typing. Not least because the hardware race isn't going to go on forever.

What you are experiencing isn't some sort of a strange deja vu. We had a similar comparison indeed on our blog, but it was well before Google Now and iOS 6 (and the improved version of Siri that came with it). Samsung's S Voice had just launched on the Galaxy S III but, honestly, the experience was less than perfect. It was more of a see-Apple-we-can-do-it-too kind of thing. Google Now has now taken over and is available on every single Android smartphone with Jelly Bean. Not only that, it's very much a part of Google's long-term plans.

Anyway, a few months ago we were less than impressed with the three different pieces of software. Slow to respond, and sometimes blatantly wrong, the virtual personal assistants just weren't up to scratch.

However, since users aren't best known for lowering their expectations, the software has evolved to offer new and better features. So, we're about to look beyond the big change logs and get some real action.

We are going to see what new tricks Apple's Siri, Google Now and Speaktoit have learned and how they can be of use in our everyday lives.

The tasks at hand are going to be as close to real-world scenarios as possible. A weather brief in the morning, pending appointments and other calendar events, the latest news, warning about flights being delayed and checking available seats for our movie of choice for the evening. These are all an essential part of an assistant's resume.

Sony Xperia Z preview: First look

GSMArena team, 13 February 2013.

Failing to react to market tendencies has been an Achilles' heel of sorts for Sony in the past. Joining the dual-core and to quad-core parties late over the past two years has caused the once mighty smartphone maker to slide down in ranks and came dangerously close to the role of an also-run.

Sony Xperia Z official photos

It appears that the Japanese giant may have finally learned its lesson though, and this time around they are among the first to jump onto the 5" 1080p bandwagon. But the Xperia Z is more than just a pretty face - with a Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset and a glass-covered back, this is also a properly powered and properly built flagship powerhouse.

As usual, we start with a quick rundown of the Sony Xperia Z hardware.

General: Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, tri/penta-band UMTS/HSPA, optional 100 Mbps LTEForm factor: Touchscreen bar phone Dimensions: 139 x 71 x 7.9 mm, 146 gDisplay: 5" 16M-color 1080p (1080 x 1920 pixels) capacitive touchscreen TFT with Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 CPU: Quad-core 1.5 GHz KraitGPU: Adreno 320 Chipset: Qualcomm APQ8064RAM: 2GB OS: Android 4.1 Jelly BeanMemory: 16GB storage, microSD card slot Camera: 13 megapixel auto-focus camera with face detection; Full HD (1080p) video recording at 30fps with HDR, LED flash, 2.2MP front-facing cameraConnectivity: Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0, standard microUSB port with MHL and USB host, GPS receiver with A-GPS, 3.5mm audio jack, NFC Misc: IP57 certified - dust-sealed and water proof up to 1 meter and 30 minutes; Shatter proof and scratch-resistant glass for the front and the back panel

The specs sheet seems to leave no boxes unchecked and even the most demanding of geeks will struggle to find something wrong with it. The Sony Xperia Z is less than half a millimeter wider than, say, the Samsung Galaxy S III, yet it packs a larger battery, a screen of more than twice the resolution and a chipset fully capable of handling all those pixels.

Sony Xperia Z Sony Xperia Z Sony Xperia Z Sony Xperia Z
Sony Xperia Z at ours

And if that's not enough for you, the Sony is willing to throw in dust and water resistance on the Z, so you don't have to worry about a spilled glass of wine ruining your evening. There's also a new 13MP camera and HDR 1080p video recording which the cameraphone enthusiasts can look forward to. It seems then, that with the latest Sony flagship it comes down to a question of not whether it is better than other smartphones on the market, but by how much.

As long as everything works as promised, the Sony Xperia Z has all the necessary ingredients to lay a proper claim to the smartphone throne. Let's find out how it all comes together at first glance.

Nokia Lumia 620 review: Auxiliary troops

GSMArena team, 14 February 2013.

At this point it should be clear that the future of Nokia rides on the success of the Windows Phone 8 platform. The Fins need the second major WP release to work as the Lumia lineup is Nokia's only shot at staying afloat in the long run. Samsung and Apple's onslaught is strong - almost brutal when looking at Samsung's numbers in the Android camp - and a previous go-to manufacturer like Nokia can only have one thing in mind: revenge.

Nokia Lumia 620 official photos

Nokia is the first manufacturer to go all in with Windows Phone, using its mapping and multimedia strengths to help the platform gain momentum. The last quarterly results were certainly encouraging, but we'll have to wait another three months to see if that was actually a blip or a hint of things to come.

Nokia will certainly be hoping that the global launch of the Lumia 620 will help it push more WP smartphones in the first three months of the year, despite the weaker seasonal demand, as It makes the platform more affordable than ever.

Besides, the Lumia 620 holds a less vulnerable position in the midrange market, leaving it to worry about only two rivals - the Huawei W1 and the Windows Phone 8S by HTC. Let's have a look at the colorful Lumia 620's strengths and weaknesses:

Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE supportQuad-band 3G with 21 Mbps HSDPA and 5.7 Mbps HSUPA support3.8" 16M-color ClearBlack LCD display with WVGA resolution5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, 720p@30fps video recordingVGA front-facing cameraWindows Phone 8 OS1.0 GHz dual-core Krait CPU, Adreno 305 GPU, 512 MB of RAMWi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-bandGPS receiver with A-GPS and GLONASS support8 GB of inbuilt storage, expandable through the microSD card slot (up to 64 GB)Active noise cancellation with a dedicated micBuilt-in accelerometer, gyroscope and proximity sensorStandard 3.5 mm audio jack1300 mAh user-replaceable batterymicroUSB port with file transfersBluetooth v3.0 with A2DP and EDRNFC supportFull Office Mobile experienceGreat build qualityFree lifetime voice-guided navigation via Nokia DriveExcellent social integrationXbox Live integration and Xbox managementNokia Music streaming service7 GB worth of SkyDrive storageAttractive priceWP app catalog falls short of Android and iOSNo FM radioNo system-wide file managerNo lockscreen shortcutsRemoving the back panel is testing

The Lumia 620 is priced at ?250 off contract so it's easy on your wallet. It offers Nokia's full-fledged turn-by-turn navigation Drive app, Nokia Music for offline listening to radio mixes, App Highlights for app recommendations, Cinemagraph, the list goes on. And while there are alternatives in the Marketplace, few are as high quality as Nokia's, while Drive+ beta is only available in three countries for WP devices different than Nokia's, meaning the majority of users are on their own in regards to voice navigation.

The Lumia 620 runs on capable hardware as well. The 5 MP camera and microSD card support are a welcome bonus, but it's the dual-core Krait chip and ClearBlack 3.8" display that shine the most, while the colorful and almost unibody-like chassis sets it apart in a crowd.

Nokia Lumia 620 Nokia Lumia 620
The Lumia 620 at HQ

And finally, we come to the OS itself. Windows Phone 8 is behind on the quality app count but it's quick to catch up and doing a pretty good job of getting developers interested. It's also a breath of fresh air for all those tired of the iOS and Android way of doing things - swipe-able homescreens, folders, notification areas, etc.

To sum it all up, the Lumia 620 has a nice set of assets to woo newcomers and gather back some of the lost momentum for Nokia - there's only the users to convince and the HTC Windows Phone 8S and Huawei W1 to beat. We'll endeavor to see if the Lumia has what it takes - starting with a tour of the hardware.
